Abstract

In June 2013, a research proposal was initiated to implement new pedagogical perspectives that would strengthen the traditional ones in some social science subjects, through the understanding and incorporation of the model of competences recently adopted by national higher education. The starting point of the research project was to identify some problems, as hypotheses, that have interfered with the purposes pursued by these subjects, in relation to the integral formation of students. These problems are mainly related to three aspects: The first is the marked disinterest of students in these subjects and the impossibility of understanding their relevance to the exercise of life in society. The second aspect is related to insufficient pedagogical and didactic training, which hinders the possibility of reflecting deeply on teaching practices. Finally, the recent adoption of the competencies model in higher education implies a significant delay in the development of new pedagogical strategies. The research project was developed in two stages: The first stage proposed an in-depth understanding of the way in which some social science courses were taught at the University, in order not only to identify contents or teaching strategies, but also to understand what teachers and students thought about the importance, applicability and relevance of the teaching and learning of this knowledge. To achieve this purpose, ethnographic techniques such as participant observation, survey, semi-structured interview, focus groups were used to obtain information based on the perceptions, beliefs, prejudices, attitudes, opinions, meanings and behaviours of the persons under study. The second stage proposed the collective work between the researchers of the project and the teachers who guided the selected subjects. The fundamental purpose of this part of the research was to establish some theoretical and practical guidelines that would guide the teachers in the re-elaboration of their Subject Plans based on the competence model.
